Where curiosity catapults discovery
Focused on helping students investigate complex questions with ethics and integrity, the School of Science, Technology, and the Natural World unites scientific discovery, technological innovation, and sustainable living under one distinct umbrella. Students studying STEM disciplines in this school not only work alongside faculty in collaborative research, they also learn to interpret data, connect theory with practice, and build excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
With options available to start conducting research in their first year and over the summer, students in this school have pursued how non-native plants fit into the local ecosystems, the differences between matter and antimatter, antibacterial agents in soil, the amount of lead and cadmium in dark chocolate, a special class of biomolecule called tRNA, obsessive compulsive disorder, and much more.
At the core of the School of Science, Technology, and the Natural World is discovery and a desire to improve human well-being, while remaining mindful of Earth’s resources and the importance of environmental stewardship.
Matt Collier, professor of biology, department chair, pre-health advisor, and 1994 Wittenberg alumnus, serves as the Dean of the School of Science, Technology, and the Natural World. Collier, a botanist and ecotoxicologist, he is currently researching the relationship between the common dandelion and anthropogenic metal contamination. He also played a lead role in getting Wittenberg certified as an official arboretum.
